Description

Cal State LA is part of the National Council on Honors Education, affiliated with the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. This organization is hosting a student-oriented discussion of perfectionism that is applicable to all students, including honors students.  Author of Perfectly Hidden Depression, clinical psychologist, Dr. Margaret Rutherford, will be speaking directly to our honors students about the relationship between the rigors of honors education, the goal-driven perfectionism that can camouflage underlying emotional pain, and the risk of self-harm or even suicidal thoughts that can exist as an unrevealed struggle for our ambitious, high-achieving undergraduates. A vital question for each student is, “Where is the line – where is my line - between academic success and emotional stability?” In turn, she will also ask honors administrators attendees about the degree to which we both promulgate the "perfectionism syndrome" among our honors students and could ourselves be plagued by this "hidden depression." You won't want to miss this installment of the COHE All-Access meeting led by Dr. Rutherford, whose 2023 TEDx on “how to recognize perfectly hidden depression” has earned over 1M views!
