Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

The Office for Students with Disabilities provides reasonable accommodation for in-person and online classes to students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Accommodations may include‚ but are not limited to: 

  • Sign Language interpreting 
  • Real-time captioning 
  • Assistive listening devices 

The role of real-time captioners and interpreters in the classroom is to give students access to content delivered by spoken words and sound. To receive timely DHH services‚ a request for a service provider should be submitted by the deadline. An email will be sent with the deadline date.

Timeline 

For regular classes: A request for a service provider should be submitted at least eight weeks before the start of the semester via your OSD Student Portal (AIM). 

For an event, tests, meetings with advisor, or campus activities, a Custom Request should be submitted at least two weeks before the event date (including finals week). The request should be filled out as completely and accurately as possible via your OSD Portal. If any required fields are left incomplete, a delay in scheduling a service provider may result. The DHH Coordinator is available to assist students with any concerns. 

Communication 

Students must communicate any changes, absences, or additional requests as soon as possible to ensure continuity of services to DHHServices@calstatela.edu.   

Late to Class 

Service providers will wait 15 minutes per class hour after class has begun for the student to arrive. If the student does not arrive to class within this timeline the service provider will be dismiss. The student must notify the DHH Coordinator if they will arrive to class more than fifteen (15) minutes late.

Service Provider No Show 

Students are asked to contact the DHH Coordinator as soon as possible if the service provider does not show up for class.
