Requesting Your I-20 (F-1 Visa)

All admitted international students who will study on an F-1 visa must request an I-20 immigration document in order to begin the visa process.

What is an I-20?
The I-20 is an official U.S. immigration document issued by Cal State LA. It confirms that you have met admission requirements and can demonstrate sufficient financial support. This document is required for your visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

When to Request:
Once admitted and your deposit is paid, you’ll receive instructions by email from the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO). Start early - the visa process takes time.

What You'll Need:

  • A copy of your passport (biographical page)
  • Proof of financial support

If you are already studying in the U.S.:

  • Copy of your current visa stamp
  • Copy of your I-94
  • Copy of your current I-20

For help with I-20 or SEVIS transfer questions, contact the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) or email international@calstatela.edu.
