In times of profound loss, the passing of a student deeply affects our University community. We recognize the importance of a supportive and compassionate environment. The Office of the Dean of Students prioritizes supporting the well-being of the family, friends, neighbors, classmates, or colleagues/co-workers.

Reporting a Student Death

If you become aware of the passing of a student, please notify the Office of the Dean of Students. You can report it by contacting us at (323) 343-3103* or by reporting it below, even if you do not have official documentation. We will guide you through the necessary steps once details are available.

*In the event of an on-campus incident involving a student, please contact University Police Department (UPD) at (323) 343-3700. For off-campus incidents, contact emergency services (911) and notify UPD as soon as possible.

grief counseling,
emotional support, and
practical assistance with administrative matters.

Notification and Coordination

Upon receiving notification of a student's death, the office promptly initiates a coordinated response and liaises with university departments to manage:

academic records,
financial obligations, and
other administrative tasks sensitively and efficiently.

Respectful Engagement

We respect the wishes of the family and prioritize their needs throughout the process. Our aim is to handle all matters with sensitivity and in accordance with their preferences.

In Memoriam and Posthumous Recognition
