Envelopes
The complete address should be located within the Optical Character Reader (OCR) read area (no return address information).
- A minimum margin of 5/8” is required between the bottom edge of the mail piece and the bottom edge of the recipients address.
- A minimum 1/2” margin is required between the right edge of the mail piece and the right edge of the recipients address.
- A minimum of 1/2” margin is required between the left edge of the recipients address and any markings to the left of the recipients address, or if no markings, the left edge of the mail piece.
Extraneous (non-addresses) printing or markings should appear as high on the mail piece and as far away from the address as possible.
Barcode Read Area
Make sure that the barcode read area remains clear of all printing. It is reserved for USPS use only.
Labels
Labels that are used on parcels, packages or large envelopes must be addressed according to the recommended format above. Labels must be applied parallel to the bottom edge of the envelope to be processed by the USPS on automation equipment.
