Off Campus Access to Library Resources

Library Job Opportunities

Access to certain electronic resources is restricted to the Cal State LA community (currently enrolled students, faculty & staff) due to licensing/copyright agreements with vendors and publishers. If you are using a computer on campus (such as those in the library and computer labs) you will be automatically connected to library e-resources; no log-in is required.

Library Access From Off-Campus

When you access library electronic resources from off-campus, you need to use one of the following methods.

1.  Campus VPN  (Recommended)

Please use the instructions below to connect to the campus network through the VPN. If you have questions or need assistance installing or using the Cal State LA VPN, please call the ITS Help Desk at 323-343-6170.

  • Navigate to https://myvpn.calstatela.edu
  • When prompted for a username and password, log in with your MyCalStateLA ID username (not email address).
  • Download and install the appropriate version of the GlobalProtect client software.
  • Run the GlobalProtect application.
  • Select the Home tab. In the section labeled Portal, type: myvpn.calstatela.edu
  • Click Connect.

  • When prompted for a username and password, log in with your MyCalStateLA ID username (not email address).

2.  EZProxy Login  (Default)

When you are off-campus and access the library's electronic resources, either through the A-Z database list or OneSearch, you will be prompted to login using the EZProxy screen (shown below). Login using your MyCalStateLA ID username and password.

Please note:

  • Place your MyCalStateLA ID account username (e.g. lsmith8) in the user name box. Do not include @calstatela.edu as part of your username.
  • If you don't know your MyCalStateLA username and password, please go to the myCalStateLA page and click on "Forgot Password."
  • If you experience difficulty in recovering your ID username and password, please contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@calstatela.edu or 323-343-6170.

Note: Cookies must be enabled on your browser for EZ Proxy to work. Learn how to enable cookies for Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox.

Known Access Issues

Sometimes, you may experience challenges accessing a database, an article, an ebook, or streaming video. Listed below are current known access problems and suggested workarounds.

  • Some of our students and faculty members, mostly Mac users, have been experiencing log-in issues when accessing EBSCO database articles from OneSearch results. While we are working with OneSearch and EBSCO database providers to resolve the problem, you can use these temporary workarounds before the login problem can be permanently fixed.

Trouble Accessing a Specific Database?

If you've been successful accessing other restricted Library databases with our EZ Proxy server, but are having problems accessing a specific database, use this page to report your database problem or email us (libsupport@calstatela.edu).

Trouble with Pop-ups?

If you have pop-up windows disabled on your browser, EZ Proxy will still work; however, Findit! and one or more of the databases accessed via EZ Proxy may not work. Findit! and some Library databases use pop-up windows as an integral part of their operating system. If you find yourself clicking a link but nothing happens, then suspect that pop-up windows should be disabled (e.g., installing a Google Toolbar will disable pop-ups).

Identity Protection Software Getting In The Way?

Identity Protection Software ( e.g., GhostSurf ) will modify the way your computer communicates with our EZProxy server. Identity Protection Software must be disabled before accessing the Library databases.

Cal State LA Login Not Working?

If you are unable to log in using your Cal State LA email/login, there might be a possible issue with your account. Make sure you do not have caps lock on, and that you have entered your password correctly. If you still cannot log in, contact the Information Technology Support Helpdesk at 323-343-6170 or stop by the ITS Helpdesk on the first floor of Library South for assistance during their open hours.
